Do Ab-focused Exercises Build Six-pack Abs Faster?

The prevailing wisdom today is that if you want to build six-pack ab muscles, you need to focus most of your time and energy on working your abdominal muscles. After all, it makes sense. You want well-defined 6-pack abs, quickly, so you need to spend your energy on beefing up your ab muscles. Unfortunately, however, this modern-day wisdom is actually incorrect and seriously misleading.
Understanding how to develop better stomach definition
Ab-specific exercises may help to highlight, or better-define, your ab muscles, but they aren’t the methods used to build the rock-hard, 6-pack abs that people seek after. While there are many reasons why abdominal exercises alone rarely result in the six-pack abs that people hope for, one of the biggest problems facing this group of people is one thing: excess body fat.
See, in order to get the 6-pack abs that you’re looking for, you need to deal with your excess body fat. And, it’s not just people with visible stomach fat — a lot or a little — who need to deal with their body fat — it’s nearly everybody. Think about it realistically, how many people have you seen with ripped six-pack abs who have flabby arms, protruding love handles, or a little ‘pouch’ around their tummy area? Probably none. The reason why is because 6-pack ab development isn’t limited to developing your ab muscles, it requires a bit more effort than just doing some ab exercises.
Develop 6-pack abs with a better diet and the right exercises
Unfortunately, excess body fat doesn’t just melt away, though that’s not what certain late-night infomercials would have you believe. However, when you eat the right kinds of foods, at the right time of the day, and especially when combined with the right types of exercises, you can turn your body into a fat-burning machine. Almost literally.
In terms of your diet, processed foods, and ‘refined’ foods are bad. Think McDonalds, microwavable TV dinners, and even ‘enriched’ white rice and white sugars. That’s not to say that you absolutely have to skip McDonalds or the quick-fix lunch, but they won’t help with your six-pack ab development. Instead, natural foods with natural sugars and fats will go a long way into turning your body into that fat-burning machine. Foods like fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, berries, fish and eggs can help you get the nutrients your body needs while avoiding the overly-refined and processed foods that clog up your metabolism.
With exercises, you should focus on larger muscle groups instead of targeting your abs alone. Whether you’re doing lunges, presses, mountain climbers or opting for cardio-focused whole-body workouts such as with sprints, avoid the focus on the abs and work on the larger muscle groups.
Building six-pack abs, unfortunately, isn’t as simple as doing some crunches, situps and throwing in a bit of cardio activity. However, by paying attention to your diet, and working some of your larger muscle groups, you can start to see definition in your abs, even without doing a single sit-up.
